Was there ever a snob like Sir Walter?
He fairly leaps from the pages of Jane Austen’s Persuasion.
With one eye on the looking glass and the other the Baronetage,
Sir Walter is Regency England’s society expert.
Who better to give advice to the modern young woman
wishing to improve her worth through marriage?
Because marrying into wealth and privilege—thus improving the family gene pool—is not as easy as it appears.
And so Sir Walter Elliot has consented to share advice with the less fortunate.
That would be us.
Come and sit at the feet of the one who was Born to be Seen.

Perhaps you're not a Jane Austen fan. As Mr. Bennett says in PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, I should be sorry to think so poorly of you at the start of our relationship. However, I understand that there are those who have not read and re-read the Austen novels so many times that they know them by heart. I deplore the fact, but I'm prepared to acknowledge it.If you're not familiar with the solemn absurdities of Sir Walter Elliot of PERSUASION, his "advice" might be a smidgen less hilarious. However, there's such an overflow of snarky humor in this book, I have no hesitation in recommending it, even to the Great Unwashed. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.
Sir Walter Elliot was the butt of Austen's jokes. She considered him a buffoon - a big bag of hot air whose untamed ego gave him an inflated opinion of his importance. Today materialism and obsession with fame has risen to a fever-pitch and Sir Walter fits right into modern life. His point of view may be taken seriously by any young (or not-so-young) lady wishing to improve her lot in life with an advantageous marriage.
For better or worse, the days when birth decided all are far behind us. With the proper clothes, accessories, and attitude, any reasonably attractive female can hope to ride that Golden Escalator to blissful matrimony, splendid homes, luxurious vehicles, and unlimited credit. And if matrimony proves not-too-blissful, the houses, cars, and designer clothes will provide ample consolation to the right-minded.
I stumbled onto this jewel and enjoyed it enormously. It's well-written, hysterically funny, and contains startling nuggets of wisdom scattered throughout the satire. What more could you ask for?

Marrying Well for Fun Profit Persuasion Sir Walter Elliot advises the Upwardly Mobile Miss edition by Laura Hile Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews
With Laura Hile's typically insightful wit, this is a fun read with just enough snark in it to bite. If you are an Austen fan, you really owe it to yourself to read this.
This book is so funny! The advice by Sir Walter Elliot at times had me laughing out loud for real! It's an enjoyable book!
The wit and humor just leaps off the page as Jane Austen's social climbing Sir Walter Elliot delights the reader with his incalculable wisdom on marriage.
The format is a series of letters to 'My Dear Vulgarian Miss' on many topics from Bling to Fauxpologies to Mother in laws. The man has your most mercenary interests at heart, a cosmopolitan, worldly air, and a calculating wisdom that had me amused and yet nodding my head at times.
I found myself laughing a loud a few times, bemused at others, and highly entertained over all for the 'sage' yet pointed advice from a gentleman who knows his topic
I have to admit I bought this book on a whim and now intend to recommend it to my local bookstore, my local historical archives, and to all my friends who love good and clever humor. This is one of the best books I've read this year and I feel downright boorish to have paid just 99 cents for it. I should be filled with regret that it completely derailed my morning and I haven't done a lick of work, but instead, I am GRATEFUL for a day spent on pleasure reading. If I had more than two hands, I'd give it more than two thumbs up (even if Sir Walter disapproved). Thank you Ms. Hile for writing an intelligent book with enough sauce be hilarious and enough taste to serve a wide audience.
Sir Walter Elliot, that bastion of advice and counsel, has written a book for the upwardly mobile miss. What a hoot! I was reluctant to read this, had put it off for days, but could not help myself. It was short, cute, clean and it can read in just a few hours. [3.5-stars]
It was so totally tongue-in-cheek, that it made my jaws ache. The caustic, self-absorbed flavor of his humor was infectious. I struggled to simply not take him seriously. If you can do that, you will really enjoy his wealth of advice that spans several hundred years.
Each topic was numbered, consisted of about two pages, contained a short paragraph, bulleted points and several quotes from famous personages. Sir Walter, was always such a name dropper.
Sir Walter’s range of advice, strangely enough, applies well to the modern woman of all ages. What fun! Can you imagine Sir Walter giving advice on love, marriage, and wealth? Perhaps that should be restated as finding a marriage of wealth, yes, that is more advantageous.
Several times I simply laughed out loud. Other times I wanted to shake my head at his audacity. Yep, that’s our Sir Walter. It really was cute.
Those who have read Austen’s “Persuasion” will no doubt remember Sir Walter Elliot for his immense vanity. Vanity not only of his very well-turned out and trim self, but vanity about being a baronet (although a baronet is NOT a peer, but titled gentry). That is irrelevant so far as Sir Walter is concerned. He is a baronet and, therefore, a Person of Importance.
The book takes the form of Sir Walter writing letters to the modern Dear Vulgarian Miss. There are delightfully apposite quotes at the beginning and ending of each chapter. The first chapter on Debt set the tone of the book for me as I chuckled my way through, although I did find I enjoyed some chapters more than others.
Laura Hile has done a marvellous job with this book, combining past and present with hilarious results. Sometimes as I was reading Sir Walter’s advice, I found myself faced with some of my own “justifications”, which had a (momentary) sobering effect. I am not sure if Sir Walter’s advice would actually work, but it was certainly great fun reading it.
In today’s celebrity-obsessed culture, with its corresponding emphasis on money, Sir Walter’s advice could, perhaps, have been extended a little to include singleness with fun and profit? Probably not, as a spinster in his day was a woman to be pitied.
This is a wonderfully witty, humorous book with snippets of sagacity, irony, sarcasm and satire stirred into a delightful mixture that is a very entertaining read. It is well-written and edited. Well done, Laura Hile!
